Wednesday Reviews

Okay, so I'm all off schedule this week. And I would just wait until next week to review this book, but I loved it too much. I must do it now. Have I mentioned how much I love Sarah Dessen lately? No? I love her. Her books make me happy. She's a master of contemporary. I don't know how she makes these books with no fantastical creatures, sword fights, wizards, or magic so compelling, but she does. She takes normal, everyday, teen issues and keeps me up until 2am with them. She's really good at eliciting emotion in a reader.

The blurb:

"a long, hot summer...That's what Macy has to look forward to while her boyfriend, Jason, is away at Brain Camp. Days will be spent at a boring job in the library, evenings will be filled with vocabulary drills for the SATs, and spare time will be passed with her mother, the two of them sharing a silent grief at the traumatic loss of Macy's father.

But sometimes unexpected things can happen--things such as the catering job at Wish, with its fun-loving, chaotic crew. Or her sister's project of renovating the neglected beach house, awakening long-buried memories. Things such as meeting Wes, a boy with a past, a taste for Truth-telling, and an amazing artistic talent, the kind of boy who could turn any girl's world upside down. As Macy ventures out of her shell, she begins to wonder, Is it really better to be safe than sorry?"

(Kasie rating: PG 13 for language)

  1. I read "the tow of them" a couple of times, trying to figure out what clever metaphor it was supposed to be.

  2. oops, it's called a typo metaphor. It's common in these parts. :)

  3. Oh, this book totally made me want to become a caterer. Night schedule, fun friends, snarky comments - what's not to love? It used to be one of my comfort books... :)

  4. I read Sarah Dressen's "Lock and Key" recently and loved it... I was looking at this one in the bookstore and debating whether to read it too.

  5. @Guinevere This one's my favorite of hers, hands down, although that's not necessarily relevant to you. :)

  6. Readerly, I know, right? And I can see why it was one of your comfort reads. I love Wes. :)

Guinevere, I read Lock and Key too. I liked that one, but I'm with Readerly, this one has to be my fav so far. I almost flipped back to the first page to start over (and that's saying a lot because I don't do that very often).

  7. The cover and description are intriguing. I'll look out for this one. I have another Dessen book, and I put it in my summer pile so that I can finally experience her writing.

  8. Yup, love Sarah Dessen, too. I just got back from a writing conference, and so my list of books to read is longer than my lifetime.
