My husband decided to sign us up for Netflix and apparently I have decided that I will watch every single appropriate movie available for instant play in under a week because I CAN'T STOP. Somebody help me stop watching movies. They're taking over. :) But, in my new found obsession, I have discovered this gem--North & South. If you like Austen type movies, you will love this. And it doesn't hurt that Richard Armitage is in it (I didn't know he existed before this movie, but I'm sold). It is a BBC, which means it's about 4-5 hours long (divided between 4 episodes) but it was worth it. The story is set in the late eighteen hundreds and is about a girl who is moved from Southern England, with all its beauty, to the industrial North, with all its Richard Armitage beauty. Hmm, all this talk, I think I need to go watch the last episode of this series again. (Can't...stop...watching...movies...)
LOL Thanks for the tip Kasie! Can you believe we have instant access with Neftlix too and ... *cowering* we haven't used it.
ReplyDeleteI think I need to repent now and go watch North and South!
Oh don't get me started. I have the whole Elizabeth Gaskell DVD collection. Wives and Daughters is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteNow for a little Gaskell trivia...she wrote North and South for Dicken's Household Words, but as it was divided into installments, and she originally thought she had more, the novel is wrapped up quickly and is a little disappointing. (There is no train scene.) THEN she had to pass away before even FINISHING Wives and Daughters. First thing I do when I die is FIND Elizabeth Gaskell and read those endings the way SHE wanted them.
Ali, the horror! You must begin watching movies immediately. :) Actually, maybe you shouldn't start...it's hard to stop.
ReplyDeleteJessie, NO TRAIN SCENE?? That's my favorite part. I liked Wives and Daughters as well, that one had my emotions all over the place. But, the ending wasn't as satisfying as North & South. I mean, after four hours of waiting for them to get together, I need a train scene. :) The rain scene was good, but I needed more. :)
OH!!! I loved this series. Very, very cool.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, in another time and another dimension, I'm having a satisfying love affair with Richard Armitage.
I love netflix!!! I haven't seen North and South. I will have to take some time and watch! =)
ReplyDeleteRenee and Kasie, Richard was mine first. I'm sorry. We are still trying to get past that very thick Irish accent, but just stay away.
ReplyDeleteAnd to think I've stayed away from this for years because I mistakenly assumed it was talking about North and South United States! You know, a Gone With the Wind type thing...ugh. But England?!!! You just said the magic country. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI hated it so much that I violently projectile vomited everywhere. Okay, I didn't watch any of it, but I'm pretty sure that would have happened if I did.
ReplyDeleteI love Elizabeth Gaskell! I think too many people don't know about her, and it's sad. Wives and Daughters is my absolute favorite, but North and South is great too. I need to buy that one ASAP. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I love N & S too....really, I think I've watched every BBC and PBS (Masterpiece) movie ever made. They always cast hot guys in those rolls. I loves me an accent..and watching manly men dance those freaky, frilly group dances. (I'd love to see the outtakes/blooper reel)
ReplyDeleteNew here. *waves*

ReplyDeleteI haven't tried Netflix yet or this movie. I enjoy 19th century society/romance novels and movies, so if I come across this I'll watch it.
ReplyDeleteI love North and South! It's my favorite movie ever. My sister loaned it to me when I had a newborn and I'd get up to feed the baby and end up staying up long after he was sleeping just so I could see more of it! It's always fun to find others who love it too.
ReplyDeleteI also loved North and South (both times I watched it:)... Have you seen Cranford? BTW, I miss you dearly, which I was reminded of when I read your hilarious comment on Candi's blog about the running man:) I pretty much love your guts!
ReplyDeleteNicki, I haven't watched Cranford. I'm guessing I'd like it. I better add it to the queue. :) And I love your guts too, so I guess we're even.
ReplyDeleteI loved North and South. My uncle described all of the movies like this as movies that are sad and then they get sadder and then even sadder and then they are ok. LOL...It is so true. I feel tourtured for the main character the whole time and then am just so glad somthing turns out alright in the end! Miss you kasie!
ReplyDeleteOh and I know how you feel about wasting your life away in front of the TV.. we just got direct TV...nough said
