Tell me your favorite book...

So I've been in a reading slump lately. Normally on Wednesdays I'd tell you about a book I'd read and loved recently. This book usually isn't the only book I've read that week, it's the one I liked the best. I don't review or post about books I don't like. But I haven't been in the reading mood. Sometimes I go through cycles, like this, where nothing I read holds my attention for very long. It's usually not the book's fault. It's just me. (Yes, I just used the 'it's not you, it's me' line) What usually gets me out of these funks is a REALLY good book. So I need some suggestions. What is the best book you've read recently? Or just tell me your all-time favorite because I'm desperate. I want to read.

  1. Hmmm. Well, you've probably already read it, but I just got around to Divergent and it was fantastic.

    Good luck with your search!

  2. I'm a huge fan of "Leviathan" by Scott Westerfeld. You probably read it already. But I love rereading it. It's just so brilliantly written.

And if you want something different, try reading Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughn. It's a graphic novel, but it's amazing!

  3. Delia, Yes! Loved DIVERGENT. I think that book got me out of my last funk. :) Great suggestion.

KT, I have read LEVIATHAN, but your suggestion reminded me that GOLIATH is coming out in September! Yay! I just added it to my wish list. Maybe September will pull me out of sour reading mood. :)

  5. Leanne, ooh, I haven't read THE POWER OF ONE. I think my brother likes that one. I will add that straight away. Thanks.

  6. I'm also in my writing slump. I can't find anything that I want to read for more than a minute.

Guess I'll have to wait for Pivot Point. =)

  7. * I meant reading slump. Although, yeah, in a writing slump too. Ha.

  8. I go through those slumps too. I would highly recommend Blackout and All Clear by Connie Willis. It's one book broken up into two. She just won the Hugo for them. They are fabulous!

  9. Aw, Lisa, you are too sweet. But I really hope you get out of your reading (and writing for that matter) slump before Pivot Point comes out because that's way too long to wait. :)

Angie, I haven't read that one (or two, as it were). Nice. I'll add them right now. Thanks.

  10. I haven't been reading much these days, but it's mostly a lack of cash. Yo, books cost money! And I don't make it to the library often enough. But Chantele recommended Waterfall by Lisa T. Bergren and I read it in one day. I really enjoyed it and at the time you could download it for 99 cents. Even better.

  11. I picked up Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children, and it's very interesting so far -- it's interspersed with old photographs and letters, which add a cool depth to the story. The MC is pretty funny too!

  12. I sent you Thirds, didn't I? It's OK if it didn't hold your attention. :)

I really enjoyed Jessica Bell's String Bridge. It's only out in ARC form right now, but I suggest it in November when it releases.

  13. Ruth, I hear you on the books=cash front. I love to hear someone finished a book in one day. That is a good recommendation.

Sara, sounds cool. I'll have to try that one. I think I heard someone else saying good things about that one as well.

Michelle, THIRDS!!! I thought I was forgetting a book I had downloaded. I haven't even started it. And from what you read at the retreat it definitely has my attention. Yay! I love it when I forget and then remember I have a great book. lol (I've done this to Natalie before too where I had a book of hers in my inbox and totally forgot about it. Oops. I'm scatter brained these day. I did read Monarch though and loved it. I'm going to order another copy since you gave me the ARC.)

  14. LOL, Kasie, no worries! I just finished Natalie's Sidekick book. Holy crap. Wow. She's so good.

I hope you enjoy Thirds! You'll read it pretty fast, I think. It's not super long. Then you'll have to worry about finding another book all over again. :)

  15. My favorite books are Jellicoe Road and Looking for Alaska. You've probably already read them...but if not, DO IT! Hahah They're always my first to recommend :)

  16. I was just going to put Jellicoe Road, that was really good. I also just finished Divergent. Thanks for the reviews!

  17. "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" by Laini Taylor is also coming out in September. About the same time of "Goliath" I think. I can't wait for that one either!!

  18. I second Ruth on Waterfall! :D I've been in a huge reading slump. You aren't alone. And I'm stealing some of these recommendations. He he. :)

  19. I recently read a couple ARCs that I enjoyed. Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins, and Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver.

And if you haven't read Austenland by Shannon Hale yet, I do recommend reading that before the movie comes out next year! It's precious.

  20. so, like, i get to give book recs? yay!

okay so, my favoritest book in this world (yes, WORLD!) is probably A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly. I have no words to express how much that book means to me. Donnelly's second YA book Revolution is also quite amazing, even though a little difficult in the first third, but totally worth it. It was like, lifechanging!

So yeah, those are the two books I'd recommend you. READ THEM!

  21. I recently finished reading Jodi Picoult's "Sing You Home." An amazing book, and if you can believe it, it even comes with a sound track!

  22. I love how you all assume I've read your favorite books. I'm glad you all think I'm so well read. :) I do read A LOT but I haven't read everything and I'm so glad for all these awesome suggestions!

KT, two people put JELLICOE ROAD so that is going to the top of my list. I have not read it, so I'm excited. And LOOKING FOR ALASKA...is that John Green? I'll have to look it up.

Other KT (what are the odds? :) Yes, I want to read DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONES. September definitely looks promising.

Chantele, steal away. :) Okay, you're the second to recommend WATERFALL, so again, to the top.

Kristen, Excellent suggestions. I LURVE Stephanie Perkins. :)

  23. Aleeza, :) I will read them. Especially with the whole 'in the world' add in. That shows passion. It must be awesome.

Susan, Ah, Jodi, I've only read one of hers. It sounds like it's time to read another. Thanks for the recommendation!

This is so cool! I know have tons of books to read! I love it!

  24. Wow, holy typo! I *now have tons of books to read.

  25. I'm kind of loving Game of Thrones... and I haven't been able to read anything in a while. Just a thought. ;)

  26. Favorite book I've read this year:
WHERE SHE WENT by Gayle Forman. Sooooooo good! I also enjoyed IF I STAY (Where She Went was actually the sequel to If I Stay).

    Other fun reads:

HEREAFTER (YA love story about a ghost) by Tara Hudson. Very strong debut novel, fast & fun. And fresh!

WITHER (a dystopian/kind-of post-apocalyptic YA) I'm blanking on the author's name but I think it's Laura Destanfano or something close to that. The first in a serious, it was thoughtful & compelling.

CITY of FALLEN ANGELS by Cassandra Clare. I can't say enough about her entire Mortl Instruments series. Love them all; this is the latest. :D

WILDEFIRE by Karsten Knight. Just came out; debut novel; first in a trilogy. Fun & different premise, felt fresh.

    On my TBR pile:
    Paranormalcy by Kiersten White
    Divergent by Veronica Roth
    Graveling by Kristin Cashore
Anything by Natalie Whipple when it's out :D

Happy reading Kasie! :D Thanks for letting us share some books!

  27. Jenn, yes, I need to get on that. :)

Lynne, we have VERY similar taste in books. I have read almost all the ones you mentioned. :) I haven't read HEREAFTER or WILDEFIRE so maybe I should try those. Are you ready to be jealous though?? I *have* read *all* of Natalie Whipple's books. :) They are awesome.

    Lola, Thanks. :)

  28. I AM jealous, but in the best way. :D I think the world of Natalie & just know if her books reflect her awesomesauce blog posts & writing sense, they will be brilliant!

I hope you find some inspiring reads from your fun post. I especially think you'll enjoy HEREAFTER. (Hopefully you could make sense of my typo-riddled comment. *wince* I'm the queen of typos. My fingers can't keep up with my brain. :D)

I can't wait for your book to come out next year! Best of luck!

  29. I'm reading Wildefire and enjoying it.

I read Gae Polisner's The Pull of Gravity (contemporary YA) and Jennifer Hillier's Creep (adult thriller)--loved them.

  30. So I don't know if it was my FAVORITE but I did like Impossible by Nancy Werlin.

And a good old fun series is the M.Y.T.H. series by Robert Aspirin if you like funny, quirky easy-to-read sci-fi's.

I hope you get out of your slump. I feel ya. The last four books I've gotten from the library I've stopped reading at chapter 10. So I'm writing down these suggestions too.

  32. Kadie, Oooh, I have that in my TBR pile! Yay! I'll have to move it to the top. :)

Amber, Haven't read that one either. :) Thanks. I'm excited for all these new recommendations.
