I know, I shouldn't laugh

You know, when I was a teenager, there were a lot of things I thought would just magically happen when I became an adult. For example, I thought all adults liked to clean. I thought it was just part of the transformation into adulthood--the desire and propensity to clean instilling themselves into your psyche. Yeah, uh, that never happened. I also thought adults had endless amounts of time. I mean, I was soooo busy as a teenager, but when I was an adult I would sit around more and do boring adult stuff and therefore would be able to devote my time to studying and bettering the world. What was I thinking? I have less time now. And finally, I thought adults had the ability to control their fits of laughter at inappropriate times. Especially during important parenting moments, like the following situation.

My eight year old daughter was wearing my ten year old daughter's shorts (using the excuse of no clean laundry or something of that nature [seriously, who isn't doing the laundry?]). The ten year old upon seeing them, complained, "Mo-om, she's wearing my shorts."

"It's fine. I'll do some laundry later, just let her wear them," I, being the perfect peacemaker, said.

The eight year old chimed in with, "They're so huge they could fit a hippo's bottom."

My ten year old promptly responded, "No wonder why they fit you perfectly."

I know, I know. I should've said, "You will have time to think about how to be nice to your sister while you sit in your room for ten minutes." That's what a responsible adult would've done. But instead, I thought, wow, when did my ten year old learn such good come backs and I laughed. Mom of the year award, right?

  1. Oh, I would have laughed. That's awesome. And, seriously, I thought I'd love to clean when I grew up to! What the heck? Why is my house still a wreck?

  2. I like 8 yr old's comment. So funny. I laugh at very inappropriate times when my kids do funny stuff. I really can't help it. They crack me up!

  3. I so had the same misconceptions when I was young. I'm so disillusioned now as an adult. I absolutely detest that whole cleaning thing. And laughing. I still have no control. My 14 year old is the queen of the comeback and constantly cracks me up. The worst is when it's in church. Holy cow! I am so rowdy sometimes. Tisk! Tisk!

  4. Kasie, Ah, the "adult fairy tale" all kids fall for. Being "grown up" (is that possible?) is nothing like I imagined. And, btw, I think your kids may have a future in comedy.;-)

  5. LOL, I think they take after you ;)

  6. I'd have laughed, too! Feel proud: the ability to fire off a good comeback gets you far. Or at least it gets some laughs. Tomato, to-mah-to. :D

  8. Oh, I laugh at my kids' antics all the time when I shouldn't. In those moments when I need to let them know that such behavior is not acceptable. It's bad, but hey, if you didn't laugh at those moments you'd go crazy. :)

  11. I always laugh at the funny things Benjamin does. He's probable going to grow up and be incorrigible as a result, but I can't help it if it's funny.

I can't remember what I thought of adults when I was a kid or teen....but it was probably smart-alecky.

  14. Nat, I know, what's up? Did we miss the cleaning "chip" they were supposed to install when we became adults or what?

Nikki, I know, kids are hilarious. It's really impossible not to laugh isn't it?

Lois, you're not the only one. I laugh even more when I know I'm not supposed to, so church is my number one place for uncontrollable fits.

Debra, I hope my kids grow up funny. It would be hard not to with their dad. My hubby is hilarious. I've been laughing for 11 years now.

  18. Sometimes (most of the time)in my house you can't tell who the adults are.
My 9yr old has to constantly reprimand my inappropriate behaviors. She'd put me on time out if she could.
