Guyliner

So out of the blue several people on several separate occasions have asked my husband if he started wearing eyeliner. What the? Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for guyliner. Really, I am. I think it's quite unfair, actually, that woman are allowed to wear make up and men aren't. Why is it fair that when we get a zit or have a blotchy complexion we have this awesome thing called foundation? And why is it acceptable for women to bring out the color or shape of their eyes by lining them, but not men?

But the truth of the matter is, it just isn't a mainstream practice and my husband, as a professional in the business world, would not be taken seriously in guyliner. It turns out, he doesn't have to wear it. Apparently over the last few years, my husband's lashes have naturally darkened (hello, where are my miraculously darkening lashes, universe?) thus prompting the question from long time friends and relatives about eyeliner. So, to all you who were too embarrassed to ask Jared (because for every one that asked there had to be five that didn't) no, he has not taken to wearing eye make up. But, because I occasionally enjoy seeing a man in guyliner, I give you my list of men who easily pull it off:

30 seconds to Mars' Jared Leto:

Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong:

The Killers' Brandon Flowers:

American Idol's Adam Lambert:

And of course, Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow:

What about you? Are you a fan of guyliner?

  1. Oh I am a HUGE fan of guyliner. Seriously. It's so emo, so dark and troubled. Mmm-mm.

  2. Wow, I didn't even know there was a word for this. Guyliner. Nice.

I'm not opposed, I guess. But it takes a very specific kind of guy to pull this off.

  3. Not a fan of guyliner, but still a fan of Johnny Depp.

  4. So, I've come back to your blog like six times to look at the pictures. :)

  5. Renee, you're busting me up. LOL They are awesome pics, though, aren't they? Who's your fav? Mine is Jared Leto. Have you seen the video for their song "The Kill"? So good. It's based off the old movie "The Shining". That movie creeped me out.

Natalie, I agree, not every guy can pull it off. But when they can, I love it. :)

Jessie, you have just cemented your status as my nemesis. Thank you. LOL (I think now you're just opposing me to make me happy I chose you as my enemy. It's working.) :)

Heather, your secret is safe with me (and everyone else who reads this blog).

  7. Brandon Flowers. Yummy. He can wear whatever he wants. Another one that looks good in guyliner...Justin from Blue October. ;)

  8. Okay, if dudes can start wearing makeup, when can women do yardwork shirtless? hmmm?

Frankly, Johnny Depp and Adam Lambert can wear lipstick and still be beautiful.

  9. I mentioned you in my post today, only I'm not sure it will further cement me as your enemy or just the opposite.

  10. I'd pick Brandon Flowers. Not only is he a cutie, I love his music. Human is one fantastic song.

  11. But wait . . . Johnny Depp is totally gorgeous. And an amazing actor. Maybe I pick him?? Oh I just can't decide.

  12. I personally am a fan of guyliner. Rick's brother wears it on occasion (at concerts) and I find it strangely attractive. I HAVE noticed Jared's darkening eyelashes. What the heck?! All I get in the aging process is gray hair, wrinkles & a sagging butt. Why must life be so unfair to some?!!

  13. Not a big fan of the guyliner thing, but I can totally understand it in stage performers/musicians. Their faces get totally washed out under all the lights so... but in real life? not so much. Some guys do seem to be able to pull it off though like Billie Joe Armstrong.

  14. Okay, can an old woman weigh-in? I do like guyliner, but it works better on the few rather than on the many. I also like long hair on men, so guess which one of your photos I like best?

  15. Guyliner, like many things, is only good in a dramatic setting. Pirate movie--yes. Rock band--yes. PTA meeting--creepy. Next door neighbor--creepy. I think the warning, do not try this at home should be prominently displayed under some of these pictures. :)

  16. Sunny, for sure. :) It definitely is.

Karen, I would completely agree with your assessment of Brandon Flower's abilities. :)

Tricia, I think I've seen men with bigger chests than mine doing yard work topless. It wasn't pretty. LOL

Emily, I knew you had good taste. And I have no idea what you're talking about. You must have the same "aging perfectly" genes that Jared has because you've never looked better.

  17. Lois, on stage or not, I looked washed out without my eye make-up. LOL

Linda, I'm going to venture to guess Johnny Depp? Just a guess. LOL I love him too. Jack Sparrow is one of my favorite characters ever.

Candice, don't use your logic on me. If my neighbor wore guyliner......okay, yes, that would be a little creepy. But my neighbor is not Brandon Flowers either (or Johnny Depp).

  18. I must say I'm a fan because my hubby's an actor and wears makeup al the time... on the stage. :)

He doesn't need guyliner, though. His eyes are very dark as-is. It's totally not fair.

And when you put guyliner on those guys in the photos you showed, WOW. They're kinda hot! We need to get this to be mainstream practice - for the ones it works for, as Natalie points out. Hehe. :)
